Excellent ETL Tool
Likeliness to Recommend
What differentiates Altova MapForce from other similar products?
The essence of Mapforce is it's true, for all intents and purposes, any to any data mapping abilities. That combined with functionality that allows the user to interact with both REST and SOAP API's makes it an incredibly powerful tool. The documentation is also very well written, and references a plethora of included sample Mapforce files which definitely helps reduce the learning curve when first starting to work with the product.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
it's flexibility, in our company we work with a myriad of data sources from API's, excel files and other flat file sources, multiple database types, and pretty much any other data source you can think of including EDI transactions. Being able to add any or all of these sources to a mapping for ETL operations makes the variety something we can manage far more efficiently than we otherwise would be able too.
What do you dislike most about this product?
When working with API's and getting errors returned from requests, there is typically not enough detail provided in the message window to allow us to know what the error is beyond the error code. This makes trouble shooting api calls from MapForce slightly frustrating, and requires a tool such as Fiddler to be running to capture the details needed to debug the issue. In general a little more details on errors would be beneficial for getting mappings up and running more quickly.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
It would be extremely helpful to understand json and XML schema structures as these will be used in the majority of mappings. While no real programming skills are required, without the understanding of these structures and what they are for, the learning curve will be steeper. A bit of SQL know how would also be very beneficial, primarily the ability to write basic queries in tSQL.
Pros
- Enables Productivity
- Trustworthy
- Effective Service
- Caring
