Not sure there was a 'bad' portion but I will say that some of the outputs from surveys we sent to stakeholders and employees ahead of the engagement were widely distributed. The herding of cats required to bring the Managers together to actually get through everything in a short amount of time. 3. The fact that part of the deliverable is the built in explanation of the process. In defense of my answers above, I'll add that we have been working on this for at least 7 years and have little to show for it. I now have reviewed the draft with my Division Leader and actually have something in hand for the first time in more than a decade. If it isn't in the end adopted as an Enterprise Wide Innovation and Technology Plan, it will be at minumun adopted as a IT Dept Strategic Plan with high level schedule and priorities for a couple years. After the week, I believe I could BUT it would have taken me over 6 months of non-contiguous time and not all members of my team would have provided input. This was well spent $$, time and energy. I am still estimating time and money saved, so this is a rough, rough estimate in terms of how much less time the EBMUD IT strategic planning process might be as a result of going through this workshop. The workshop was a good, solid start to the IT strategic planning process, but it feels like there is a lot left to do. There were quite a number of ideas and hypotheticals, and the next steps will be very hard to make the ideal numbers more realistic to the organization, the finances, and the culture. It would also have been better to have included more people, but then there would not have been enough time. So the next several weeks and next steps will be really important, and I look forward to Info-Tech helping with these next steps. Read Less

Developing core values etc can often be a lengthy process, and her methods really cut through some of the tedium that can occur. I also greatly appreciate the visit from my executive counselor for the kick-off and discussion with our senior leadership that were present. I've worked with several facilitators over the years, and Denis is one of the best. The experience overall was fantastic and is the main reason I have a contract with Info-tech. My only disappointment, perhaps, is that Info-tech limits the format of the deliverable to slides, it really should be available in a document that could be published to the public, especially for government agencies as that is our major shareholder. In a very short of mount of time, Paul Herzstein, our strategic planning workshop leader, was able to effectively compiled extremely complex information regarding projects goals, objectives, workload, SWOT analysis into a very well organized document including priorities and estimated implementation timetables. Paul demonstrated to be an excellent communicator, very practical, well-organized, who was able to maintain a great pace collecting, documenting, summarizing, and presenting tons of information into a single document within a couple of weeks. Worst part of the experience was not the workshop itself but rather prepping for the CIO vision. I highly recommend that all internal surveys are initiated within the hiring entity rather than InfoTech as we ended up spending a lot of time fishing out survey reminders from Junk Mail folder (our County does allow or promote whitelisting as a best practice) Read Less

The discussion topics allowed the team to collect their thoughts and begin restructuring our support of our business and internal customers. In addition, it lays the foundation for the IT leadership team to grow and develop new skills that fundamentally change our relationship with other departments. Finally, this will help us focus on long-term objectives, not just near-term projects. The most challenging part of the experience was the time commitment. The CIO Business Vision survey was a great tool and is something I'd like to repeat. The way it is presented is very professional looking. The slicing, ratings, and rankings are very well done. The MGD results were perhaps a bit mixed due to our staff's abilities / mindset but my goal (back before even considering the IT strategy workshop) was to expose staff to a more scientific/methodical way of viewing all that should be going into managing IT and I think by just doing the diagnostic it may start people thinking more broadly rather than getting caught up in the day to day. I'd like to think as leadership matures (etc.) that we'd be able to get more meaningful / actionable results from that instrument. One thing I would change would be to have sat in myself on the Business Vision interviews. I had decided ahead of time that we shouldn't as I've seen IT in those type of meetings taking a lot of time explaining themselves and the history of decisions which has very much squelched open feedback and dialogue. However, when we received the feedback after the fact there were a number of areas that we didn't understand the context of or that contradicted other things we've heard. There's enough backstory and context that makes it difficult for an outsider to quickly interpret. So for us at COD, I think one IT person who would just listen would have helped and given more value to the feedback. I thought the overall structure of the workshop was great. The coverage and resulting presentation of things like Themes, Guiding Principles, Maturity Level, Strategy and Vision were all well done and useful. The worst part of this experience (and it was by no means as bad as the word worst makes it sound) was that the two facilitators were a bit disjointed in their presentations and it didn't feel as organized and prepared as I would have expected. Best: The interaction provided us with valuable insight that we knew but didn't focus on - We do not know our end users and need to find out! Worse: It was hard to tie all the input data together. I am not sure we aligned ourselves completely in the end.

Difficult to quantify but I expect it will be huge!

The best aspect of the workshop was simply being able to tap into Andy and Dave's expertise about IT. It have helped us to articulate a true IT strategy for the first time, and at the same time provided some valuable reinforcement that we were largely headed in the right direction already. It's difficult coming up with negative aspects, but perhaps the lack of insight into our particular industry - Advertising/PR.

Best Andy's experience Worst Inadequate time to complete document and all discussions. It should be a 5 day event on site, not 4 days Inexperience of the intern in asking some of the questions

Best was - focused event to accomplish a meaningful/valuable strategy plan that is aligned with the business. It has already allowed me to have educated and positive discussions with business leaders here at Palermo's! The worst part was - I was not able to be 100% focused on the plan creation and it was my first time creating a true strategy plan for a large organization so I was unprepared for the depth of the meeting. David(s) kept me on track and did a fantastic job getting us to the finished plan!

Very thought through program that was administer very well. Comments and examples provided were relevant and helped in terms of driving out details. Learning our weakness has a positive and negative. Overall positive experience.

Ross and Emmanuel were very professional and provide excellent guidance, and word smithing to prepare the PowerPoint presentation for our executives and board members.

Flexibility of Info Tech facilitators willingness to tailor the templates to create practical approach to develop and IT Strategy for a small IT staff.

Best: we got a very good document for discussion with our leadership. Worst: Did seem that some of the exercises were a little play it by ear. Was hoping they would have synthesized more of the reports we had prior to the start.

I dislike the dollar question because this survey is sent TOO SOON after the engagement to put an effective number here. That said, the exercise did provide guidance and value. My leadership team has a better understanding of where we should be heading as a department.

Process was concise and the deliverables were as expected.

TDS Management became energized and departmental relationships were strengthened. There were no worst aspects of this strategy workshop!

This was an extremely valuable experience, this will give our team strategic direction for the next 3 years, so although I cannot put an exact dollar value on this, it will give clarity, focus and vision to our entire team and provide evidence of our value to the entire organization

Very, very informative and excellent transfer of knowledge

Having an experienced and neutral facilitator for the IT Strategy development is the best aspect of the experience. Sumit has a pleasant personality, he challenges is a respectful way and engages the participants in a positive way.
