Info-Tech Research Group’s Desktop Virtualization Vendor Landscape report lists Citrix and VMware as market Champions. The report notes a movement toward strategic vendor alliances to leverage different delivery methods including desktops in the Cloud.
London, ON, May 2nd, 2012 - A recent Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Vendor Landscape report, published by Info-Tech Research Group, ranked Citrix and VMware as market Champions. Vendors in this space are recognizing the need to expand on access and delivery methods for businesses and are forming strategic alliances to make this happen.
“While the year of the virtual desktop has not yet arrived as some media and analysts had predicted, the market has seen a steady increase of adoption over the last number of years.” said Laura Hansen-Kohls, Senior Research Analyst for Info-Tech Research Group. “Desktop-as-a-Service is the next big thing in VDI. Vendors are forming strategic alliances, particularly with storage and cloud solutions, to position themselves well for this exciting new delivery model.”
Citrix XenDesktop is listed as a Champion in the report for their commitment to innovation and market expansion through acquisitions. In 2011 they acquired Kaviza, RingCube, App-DNA and Sharefile. According to the report they continue to be ahead of the curve when introducing functionality, but must maintain their current pace of innovation in order to stay ahead of the pack and continue to gain mindshare from the mid-market.
VMware View, the other Champion in the report, is closing the gap between themselves and Citrix with their recent push of new releases. View still requires third-party solutions for user-installed apps and XP to Windows 7 migration capability, but works well for organizations that already have a lot of VMware licensed or for a straight on VDI deployment in a modest-sized environment.
Quest Software is the lone Innovator in the report and leverages strong partnerships with other vendors to create a competitive ecosystem. Positioned as a lower-cost alternative to Citrix, Quest vWorkspace would be of interest to businesses that emphasize the importance of heterogeneous environments and who want to avoid vendor lock-in.
Red Hat Enterprise is the latest entrant into the market space and is positioned as the low-cost alternative to VMware. Info-Tech Research Group believes them to be an ambitious vendor with a promising future and has listed them as an Emerging Player in the report.
