Despite all the hype surrounding The Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), it has not become the dominate architecture for most organizations. While adoption rates vary, lack of SOA understanding, security and governance concerns primarily inhibit adoption. Additionally, while many companies report adopting SOA, few are able to distinguish a true SOA strategy from a bunch of Web services.

The SOA development paradigm has strong strategic long-term benefits, but brings very limited immediate tactical advantage to the organization. The SOA market is still immature, with early adopters investing heavily in multiple pilot projects. CIOs should only consider adopting this immature technology after very careful consideration.
