Gitlabs biggest strength is around how it aids collaboration, during software development and deployment processes. I have found it easier to perform merge requests, code reviews and access detailed history of changes made to our codebase overtime. This helps us greatly for proper team documentation and consistency.

What do you dislike most about this product?

Perhaps a result of the large collection of features and functionalities on this platform, it comes with a steep learning curve for new users and can easily get very complicated to setup. Secondly, I do occasionally experience performance lags when working on very large repositories.

For source code management, secured and automated software deployment, Gitlab is just the right software, especially when it involves enterprise software.

What do you dislike most about this product?

Scans for large repositories can take longer than expected, which may create bottlenecks in fast-paced environments.

GitLab is an all-in-one, diverse DevSecOps software. It inserts security testing tools into the CI/CD workflow, eradicating the necessity of involving external sources to build, deploy, and test applications, thus reducing the overall complexity of the process. It also offers various AST techniques such as SAST, DAST, etc natively, which otherwise needs multiple tools in other similar products.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

One of the standout features is that it is capable of integrating testing tools into the CI/CD pipeline. In this way, we don’t have to leave our testing environment to perform Static Application Security Testing, or other such scanning functions. Its first-developer methodology for security reduces the cost of fixing the lifecycle of developments by early identifying and resolving vulnerabilities at the coding phase.

What do you dislike most about this product?

Its resource-intensive security scanning slows down the CI/CD workflow when dealing with large projects such as during SAST and Container Scanning. This scenario highly impacts the productivity of our developers in case of delayed pipelines frequently.

I recommend that one who considers it to adopt as a security or for other particular uses first evaluate its utilization and ensure that whether you or your team is capable enough to justify its highly advanced features or not.
