What differentiates Microsoft Project from other similar products?
MS Project is a tool with a lot of capacity to successfully track large and complex projects. Its design is robust and has functionalities to ensure the application of best practices in project management. On the other hand, we can use Project stand-alone or in the cloud, and its .mpp storage format has been adopted as an international standard, so many other manufacturers have joined in. Behind MS Project there is a methodology that has been adopted and used by the PMI, IPMA, and other well-known institutions in the Project Management industry.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
Automation in monitoring and percentage progress of tasks is one of the functionalities that I use the most since I can create a breakdown of tasks into granular activities, assign a weight, and generate accurate progress reports. Customizing additional fields is an important feature to assign customization features that some particular projects need. I can develop a schedule and share it with other users, plus I can export the information in .PDF format if necessary.
What do you dislike most about this product?
MS project may benefit from greater customization capacity if it could use pre-designed templates for specific projects and the possibility of receiving greater customization for the branding of the company that uses it. On the other hand, when we parameterize complex projects with many activities we can make mistakes in the parameterization that could be detected with advanced debug tools.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
It is important that all people who are going to use MS Project for the first time receive training so that the schedules they implement are correctly parameterized and the monitoring can be effective. Cascading or interactive projects are perfect for MS Project.
