What differentiates Moodle from other similar products?
Moodle allows for a high degree of customizability, which is certainly good if your institution has the resourcing and personnel to manage and maintain this customization over time. Compared to competitors such as Canvas or Blackboard, you really can shape the user interface and graphic appearance to your liking.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
Ease of access as an open source tool (if that is how you are employing it) can certainly be an advantage. Again, this is if you are equipped well enough to do the ongoing maintenance and management that comes with the greater levels of customization.
What do you dislike most about this product?
Compared to competing LMS's, features feel dated. More importantly, with more robust features there is a much higher likelihood that end users will either be confused, not use the product, or set up their assignments or gradebook in a way that does not calculate correctly. This was a common occurrence for us and resulted in a need to resource support at a much higher level than needed once we moved to a different LMS.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
If customization is a priority and your end users are very comfortable or desire an extensive feature set, then Moodle might work well. Otherwise if you are looking to have as many faculty as possible engage in the LMS, Moodle likely will produce frustration.
