What differentiates Sakai from other similar products?
Sakai's vendor support is top-notch. If an issue presents itself, a global set of developers is ready to address, refine or respond to a suggestion. The feature set is broad, flexible and powerful. SMEs and course developers find the flexible design interface refreshing without sacrificing accessibility requirements. Students find the interface just as easy to navigate as Canvas, Moodle or Blackboard and a nice change from what they experienced in high school. We have used Sakai for over 5. years now having switched from another bigbox vendor, and we're able to pass on the savings to our students w/o sacrificing the user experience.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
Sakai is reliable. Year to year, even through upgrades, Sakai is as dependable as Linux is as a server platform and for nearly as long. Sakai is feature rich. Few platforms outpace Sakai for cost per feature, breadth of support, ease of management, and implementation. Our vendor welcomes input on product improvement, and we trust and see platform developers as deeply invested and partners in our work. Sakai is also innovating. The platform has continued to grow and keep pace with user insight, requests and insight from teaching and learning groups and students. We have access to our data and the data is ours.
What do you dislike most about this product?
While Sakai is solid, every platform has a blind spot or area of weakness. For Sakai, this would be in the area of actionable analytics. Sakai includes course statistics and can be connected to an LRS, and it even includes per-student stats. However, it is difficult w/o IT help to port student data into an overall program-level set of reports or longitudinal summaries like those that could come out of Microsoft BI.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
The tendency is to go with what everyone else is doing. "Did you hear about so and so? They just moved to X." Do your research and talk to end-users (the students, teachers, and support staff) of the platforms being considered. The biggest platform may not be as responsive as one with near parity; it may just be the platform that soaks your budget the most.
