Open-source development, huge breadth of features.

What differentiates Sakai from other similar products?
Sakai is truly open-source. If it doesn't contain a feature you want, you are free to modify it to suit your needs and share that feature with any other users; with community consensus, it may become part of Sakai permanently. It is also not subject to the management changes that plague competitors. The level of possible customization offers an institution near-total control over all aspects of the LMS, which is only possible with open-source.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
Being open-source, and customizable top to bottom by an internal team at an institution, makes it uniquely flexible.
What do you dislike most about this product?
Individual features may work very differently under the hood when they've been created by different people.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
Host everything yourselves. Sakai offers institutions a chance to determine all aspects of how the LMS works, from features to data governance, and self-hosting is the best way to take advantage of that.
Pros
- Helps Innovate
- Continually Improving Product

- Enables Productivity

Easy to use, robust features

What differentiates Sakai from other similar products?
Sakai is a great product with a vibrant community of talented individuals working behind it. Out of the box, it offers many robust features. The community is adding new features and improvements all the time. Most peers I work with talk about how intuitive it is to use the system.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
Seeking support and assistance from the community is fantastic. Most of the time if you've encountered a bug, someone's already hard at work to fix it. You can quickly and easily bring in that change.
What do you dislike most about this product?
Consistency between tools is a challenge for Sakai. Recently, there's been a big push to standardize the format of each tool and to standardize the names of buttons. This will go a long way to improving usability, even though usability is good.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
Get involved with the community early on! There are many opportunities for Teaching & Learning calls, QA testing, virtual conferences, etc. Embracing the community will help you through implementation, upgrades, etc. You can also share resources, like training material.
Pros
- Helps Innovate
- Continually Improving Product
- Reliable
- Performance Enhancing

The Sakai community members that have an invested interest in having a quality, usable product for their institutions.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
Working with the Sakai community.
What do you dislike most about this product?
There can be some non-intuitive tools for our instructors to use or understand when using Sakai. With time and our support assistance however, they tend to get a grasp of it. I think this is a common among all LMS's, there will always be a learning curve.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
It's best to compare what Sakai can do for your institution with a community that is committed to always improve and have a dedicated, professional members in the educational environment. The cost is also less whereas commercial vendors tend to be much more. Vendor support is also very important aspect and we have high touch, quick support response from out LMS host vendor.
