What differentiates Hornetsecurity VM Backup from other similar products?
Originally it was the only VM level tool for Hyper-V which was a focus of our business and so for our clients. We had another product but it was not performing and cost more so the move made sense. As mentioned, I have never had a failed recovery when the backup ran and the backup target was functional. Which does not mean we could not have gone to the offsite if needed but why if not. When the onsite backup target was not functional, then offsite recovery was the bacon saver
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
Very easy interface to use for all aspects of management and operation.
What do you dislike most about this product?
It does not have to run on the Hyper-V or VMware host but as an SMB product it often does so if you want all the features on (automatic testing of recovery for example) it is using CPU cycles that the VMs on the host need and you can get in to a contention situation. Same for disk access, since it pulls from the remote or attached storage to a "sandbox" location and runs the recovery. Finally, if you do not want to do recovery level testing but want to check the backup integrity (similar to a CRC process) it cannot do this while backup operations are running so you end up with a reduced window for backup or reduced days of integrity,
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
Perpetual licenses are a commitment in CAPX but with a moderate renewal cost over a period of years they pay for themselves, Also, based on number of VMs per host and number of hosts the scale may make that pricing more attractive. Be aware of how you deploy the backup ingest and management machine and if you can avoid deploying that on the host you will better utilize the features available.
