Independent, generous, and organized.

What differentiates Zulip from other similar products?
Zulip stands out in its message organization model, access management, commitment to privacy, and generosity for education users. Compared to Slack, Teams, or Discord, Zulip understands communication should be organized at different levels of abstraction: channels group similar topics, and threaded topics should be focused on specific conversations that can be marked complete when done. It's the best of IM and email combined, and no other messaging software comes close to this level of clarity and organization. Also, it was super easy for me as an academic running a research lab to request free access to the Zulip Cloud Standard tier!
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
I love everything about Zulip. It does what it came to do (instant messaging for teams) very well, doesn't try to shove extra features in that don't make sense (e.g., tons of emphasis on chatbots, AI, etc.) and packages it all in a very usable, settings/management-rich interface. The company is also very generous to be providing Zulip Cloud Standard to my academic lab for free, which I'm grateful for.
What do you dislike most about this product?
I genuinely have no complaints. This software does exactly what I want it to do.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
I can't speak to what using this at an organization of hundreds or thousands of people would be like, but Zulip is the ideal, hands-down best choice for small teams.
